The He-Bride, installation

The basis "The He-Bride, installation" is a photograph of the original work. The artist Martin Gut tailored a suit for a bride groom from a wedding dress; a tuxedo consisting of trousers, shirt, waistcoat and jacket with a train. «He-Bride» is a work in the context of gender. He questions the often considered romantic rituals and symbols relating to the “white feast”.

Through reversing the roles the artist exposes the inequality of traditional gender roles. The «He-Bride» scrutinizes the ritual of giving away the bride, from a man, her father to her future man, her groom. The woman is dressed like a flower and will be handed over to the pollination in the wedding ritual. Thus it is suggested, that a women always needs protection from a man, and virginity – white dress as a symbol of innocence - is an essential value which must be signalled.

If we consider this asymmetry from a biological perspective, it can appear that the female is given a greater sexual value that must be protected by the male. This manifests in social and personal contexts and relates to how we view ourselves as a sexual subject. In this work Martin Gut shifts the expected asymmetry to show it weighted against the male.
