Drug Vending Machine

Drug Vending Machine in the Artmuseum Lucerne, Martin Gut 2017

The Drugsomat from Martin Gut offers a range of legal and illegal drugs - from alcohol to heroin - in the price range of one to nine francs. Or more accurately it would offer these substances if the flower power vending machine wasn’t permanently out of order. Martin Gut filled it with twenty-four of the most common drugs, without differentiating between socially acceptable, legal, prescription or illegal street drugs.

Accordingly, coffee, valium or heroin can be chosen - or rather could be chosen - because again, the machine is permanently out of order.

The work poses questions about our own interaction with intoxicants, as well as questions about the interaction with and the political pathways for the people who put themselves in more jeopardy by ingesting dilution agents as well as by procuring their preferred substances, than how the substances themselves actually harm them.
